North Plainfield lost its first game of the season in a hearbreaker Sunday evening at East End School.
Trailing visiting Warren 6 -3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, NP scrapped for two runs on Colin Disch's infield single, Pat Davis' walk, Matt Velasquez' double and Jeff Bassman's single. Brian McFarlane added a walk, and with the bases loaded and one out, NP then grounded into a force play at home and suffered a controversial called third strike to extinguish their hopes of coming out on top.
Velasquez was on fire at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a homer and two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three runs. Jeff Bassman contributed two singles and an rbi. McFarlane got the other rbi on an infield sacrifice in the fourth inning to tie the score at 3 runs apiece. Pat Davis' heads-up baserunning turned two walks into two runs.
Jake Cohan went the distance on the mound for North Plainfield, striking out six batters and allowing only six singles and four earned runs.
